Scroll compressor, oil free screw compressor and oil injected screw compressor are all positive displacement compressors which trap a certain amount of air inside the compressing chamber and increase its pressure by reducing the compressing chamber volume. However, they do have the following differences:

Oil free screw compressor: it is a most common type of oil free compressor. Inside the air end, there is no lubrication oil. So the discharging air could be of a relatively high temperature and the noise could be higher than the other two.

Oil injected screw compressor: now it is a most frequently used type, almost in every industry. When the air is compressed inside its air end, the lubrication oil is also injected to cool down the air, to lubricate the screw rotors and also to seal the gap of the rotors. The compressed air from this type of compressor could contain a certain amount of oil, which makes it not suitable for those sensitive industries and applications.

We all know the sound is generated by object vibration. In the compressor, the noise comes from two parts, air end and bearing. For a screw compressor, the noise is from the two rotary rotors and their bearings, because the two rotors have contacts with each other.

However, for the oil free scroll compressors, the scroll elements are driven by belts, which generates much less noise compared to bearing friction; Moreover, inside the scroll element, the fixed scroll and the orbiting scroll have no direct contact, producing very limited sound.
