Instrument air must be quite clean and dry without oil. Pneumatic instruments and control valves are all sensitive devices that fail to work normally when they are exposed to contaminations. Regular compressed air without being properly dried and filtered will not be able to satisfy instrument air requirements.
Normally, instrument air is required to be totally oil free. For some instrument air applications, it is acceptable to choose an oil injected rotary screw compressor with air dryer and multi-stage filters to reduce oil content and we call this technical oil free to be ISO 8573 Class 1 level. A completely oil free instrument air compressor ensures totally oil free compressed air but its cost will be much higher. Plant air is a general term called for compressed air in the manufacturing factory or plant. It is normally used for general tools, heavy machinery, cleaning or sandblasting. It may contain some oil or moisture content. However, instrument air has to be relatively dry and oil free to prevent any damages on the valves, instruments etc.
